Are Your Emotions Running Wild?

We all have those memories that haunt us. They can be from an injury or an emotional event. When we have a traumatic experience, we respond with fight or flight or freeze. When the memory of an event is attached to a strong emotion, your brain cannot tell the difference between it being in the present or the past. I have been asked what brainwave optimization is and what it will do for you. A client shared this analogy with me to gain a better understanding of what she was experiencing.

“When something traumatic happens, the memory and emotions attached to the memory are like wild horses. Are they running wild and free across within your mind?

Each time you relive the event, another wild horse is born. As you continue to relive the event, the herd gets larger and larger. Soon they take over your life.

After brainwave optimization, that changed for me. Imagine you go out to the open plain and round up all these wild horses and herd them into a huge corral. You close the gate, stand, and watch as these emotions wildly express themselves. They run, kick, and toss themselves in every direction, trying to get out. As you move closer to the gate you reach for the lock, open the gate, and swing it open. Immediately the horses stampede to the opening that separates them from their freedom. The powerful sounds of hoofs hitting the dry dirt create a massive dust cloud, covering the landscape. But then there is silence. The dust settles. The powerful force of a hundred horses has come to a standstill, eyes staring at you, waiting. Waiting for you to decide. The open gate is the recall of the trauma. But this time, your mind is able to stop the emotions long enough for you to decide. What do you want these horrifying emotions to do? Instead of the regular routine of holding you captive, you now have a choice in how you want to respond.”

This client is still working with her therapist, but now she has the capability to work through this traumatic experience.

This is not the first time I have heard an experience like this story. Brainwave optimization helps your brain reach a uniquely deep state of relaxation. Our clients typically experience calmness, better sleep, and release of stress.

We all have some wild horses trying to rule our lives. Brainwave optimization can help you get your life back.

Until next time, take care.

Should we call you Sugar Lips?

By Joey Wilson

Sugar is awesome! I love the sweet stuff, yet we all know that too much sugar can harm your body. But what about your brain? Well, it is part of the body. I hate to break your heart, but too much sugar consumption can hurt your brain as well. The average American and our Canadian neighbors eat about 66 pounds of sugar a year[i]. A diet high in sugar can hinder learning and memory by slowing down the brain. A study in UCLA has shown that sugar damages the synaptic connection within the brain (the communication or connection between two neurons or brain cells).[ii] It also has been found that sugar and carbon rich foods not only play havoc with our weight – it messes with our mood! It can lead to brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, learning disorders[iii] and is a possible cause of depression[iv]. We all know a sugar-laden diet can lead to diabetes, and there are indications that there is possibility of a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s, a neurodegenerative disorder now being classified as a type 3 diabetes[v].

So far, not so good. In a study conducted at Princeton University, in a preliminary review, neuroscientist Bart Hoebel stated “Sugar triggers production of the brain’s natural opioids. “We think that is a key to the addiction process …the brain is getting addicted to its own opioids as it would to morphine or heroin.” Sugar can become an addiction and like a drug the withdrawal signs are similar to drug withdrawal[vi]. Enough with the bad news. The good news is you can do something about it. Your mind is very powerful. But do not do this alone. Work with your physician, counselor or nutritionist.

At An Optimal Brain, we work together with providers as a team member. Brainwave Optimization is an excellent method to “unstuck” your brain and bring it back to its natural state of relaxation and help you “break the habit”.

Put Your Brain On Vacation

We live in a high stressed world. The problem is, we never take the mental time away to give our brain a break.

Written by Joey Wilson

We live in a high stressed world. We are constantly bombarded by advertising, life challenges and high stress careers. The problem is, we never take the mental time away to give our brain a break. Yes, many of us may take a vacation, but sometimes we become even more stressed than what we were before we left. Why? Because stuff piled up that wasn’t dealt with! Don’t wait to take a couple of weeks off. Give your brain a mental vacation. Take time out during the day to, as the saying goes, “Stop to Smell the Roses.”

When we continually stress ourselves, our brain finds it difficult to return to a relaxed state. In a high stress career, we are continually operating in a state of excite, flight/fight. If we continue to live at this high level of stress our brains soon consider it to be the new normal. Therefore, it will readjust its baseline and redefine it as the new relaxed state. It now becomes very difficult to put your brain in relaxed vacation mode. If you do not give your brain a break, you can become “STUCK” like a cow trying to get over a fence, not able to get over, but can’t get back to the pasture.

“STUCK” like a cow trying to get over a fence….

Meditation and yoga are great tools to achieve a state of relaxation. But if you are stuck, the results can be temporary. To achieve the full benefits of meditation and yoga, your brain must be working in harmony. Harmony occurs when the left and right sides of your brain are working in an interdependent relationship. If they become dependent, the outcome can be exhibited as anxiety, depression, lack of sleep, digestive problem, the list goes on. Brainwave optimization was created to help the brain become “unstuck.”

Allow your brain to achieve relaxation and regain harmony. Give your brain several mental breaks during the day. Take the time to Smell the Roses. Do learn yoga and meditation. However, I have found the greatest way to give your brain a chance to have a daily mental vacation and to smell the roses, is to experience brainwave optimization.
